Note: Other than Mailer himself, and possibly Muhammad Ali, John F. Kennedy is the most memorably depicted figure in Mailer’s historical pantheon, and no national event reverberated more powerfully for him than Kennedy’s assassination. Larry Schiller, Mailer’s collaborator on several books and films, asked me to write this introduction to a collection he conceived. It contains Mailer’s iconic essay on JFK, “Superman Comes to the Supermarket,” a second essay on Jacqueline Kennedy, and a huge collection of photographs, many never before published, of Kennedy’s dashing, superbly executed campaign in the 1960 Democratic presidential primary.
